NORMA JEANNE LAURETTE AND GREG CECI'S DOG TRAINING PHILOSOPHIES & METHODOLOGIES
Everyone wants a dog they can take anywhere. To raise a solid dog, you have to start with a strong foundation. Dog training takes dedication, patience and consistency.
The most important learning period in your dog’s life is between 7 and 16 weeks of age. You'll accomplish the most gains during this early puppy imprint training period. Your dog’s behaviour, personality and social skills are literally imprinted during this time. How you choose to train your dog is crucial to your dog’s overall temperament and behaviour for the rest of its life. Many turn to dominance or "balanced" training which is based on the dog - pack leader theory and can include unpleasant reprimands which erode the human/canine trust bond. Although "balanced" training sounds appealing, it means that they use both positive reinforcement and punishment. The truth is that punishment is not necessary and is potentially harmful to a dog's temperament and emotional well-being. And those who love their dogs don't want to punish them. Why punish when you can teach? Not only does The Dominance Theory have no scientific basis, it's outdated and has been debunked by all the dog world's most respected behaviourists. The associated techniques are archaic and in many cases physically and emotionally abusive. But, we now know better. It has been scientifically proven that punishment causes stress, anxiety and/or fear and that these emotions inhibit a dog's ability to think, learn, remember, problem solve and make choices. Therefore, punishment is clearly counter-productive to the learning process. And in worst case scenarios, the dog can become reactive, aggressive and unpredictable. Positive does not mean permissive - there must be consequences for incorrect choices however, there's no need or excuse for the use of intimidation, fear, discomfort, pain or reprimands of any kind. Positive training through resource control works far better than any punishment or reprimand can. Best of all, it nurtures the human/canine trust bond and the protects the dog's emotional well-being. Reprimands damage that bond. If you're doing it right, dog training should be fun for both the dogs and their guardians. Besides, we want companions not slaves.
